Fans Celebrate LA Kings Stanley Cup Final Victory

Fans celebrate a first period goal scored by the Los Angeles Kings during game 6 of The Stanley Cup Finals June 11, 2012 in Los Angeles, California. A win in game 6 against the New Jersey Devils lead the Los Angeles Kings to their first championship in franchise history.

My assignment was to photograph the fan reactions, specifically any illegal activity (rioting) that may have occurred after the win. It was clear after the first period that the Kings had secured the championship when the scoreboard flickered "4-0." Emotions ran high for the fans who watched their #8 seed team advance to the finals and were ready for the conclusion.

When the game ended hundreds of fans swarmed the streets around the Staples Center to celebrate the victory. Los Angeles Sheriff Deputies worked to control the crowd. After an hour, the Deputies pushed the increasingly rowdy crowd back onto  Figueroa St. away from the Staples Center. "To the streets, to the streets," became the chant of choice for the crowd. Trash cans, parking cones, and anything not securely fastened was throw in the path of Deputies as they gave chase to about hundred fans rushing down the street. Drivers started to panic and navigate away from the mob which was now attacking passing cars.

The crowd chanted "Flip the bus, flip the bus," as a Metro driver attempted to navigate through the intersection of Figueroa and 9th. The bus was quickly overtaken and rocked side to side as fans kicked and smashed anything they could. Pandemonium had officially set in.

Suddenly, a loud bang rang out. My first thought was that it was another trash can that had been thrown, but the bus quickly drove off and the crowd started to run as Deputies pumped rounds of rubber bullets into the mob.
